Character history[]

Jaws: The Revenge[]

Jake is first introduced communicating with Michael from the surface barge as he embarks on an assignment tagging conches. When Michael returns to the surface, they get into an argument about Michael leaving him to work overtime. Jake realizes his mistake and apologizes to Michael and offers condolences. Jake and his wife Louisa are introduced to Ellen on Christmas as Thea unwraps her presents.

On Neptune's Folly, he and Michael discuss having three months of work left and are running out of funding for their degrees. Jake suggests working with the Office of Naval Research, but Michael shoots it down, saying they put bombs on dolphins. During Jake's conch dive, he encounters the shark, and it attacks the barge, biting off a chunk of the deck. Michael is shocked, but Jake sees this as an opportunity to do "real research" and study the shark. Michael asks Jake not to tell Ellen about the shark.

Back on the Folly, Jake develops a transmitting tag to study the shark's motor systems and heart rate. Michael is concerned that the grant's funds are being misused and their work wouldn't be good enough to get their doctorates, but Jake makes a deal with Michael to study the shark for a few days then return to the conches. Michael reluctantly accepts. Later on the barge, Jake and Michael prepare to tag the shark, with William and Clarence chumming the water. The shark arrives and takes the bait, allowing Jake to tag it with the transmitter. Jake and Michael track the shark's heartbeat using the Folly, but ultimately lose it.

The next day, while Michael is on a dive, Jake detects the shark's heartbeat and warns Michael to return to the surface. As Michael starts the submersible the shark ambushes him, destroying the submersible. Michael is chased into a shipwreck, and he uses his oxygen tank to speed to the surface when the shark breaks through the ship's hull. The following day, Michael decides to dive down again in search of the shark without the submersible, but Jake is worried they would miss Carla's show and fears for his safety. Michael confides in Jake that he is indeed scared, but he has to conquer his fear. Jake allows Michael to dive and tells William to keep a look out for the shark.

After the beach attack, Jake and Michael take off in search of Ellen and the Folly with Hoagie on his plane. Hoagie tells them about Ellen's fear that the shark is after the Brodys for revenge. After they locate the Folly, Hoagie crash-lands the plane into the water and they recover Ellen. Jake reprograms the transmitter to emit electrical impulses to drive the shark crazy. He climbs onto the bowsprit and manages to feed the shark the transmitter, but not before losing his grip and being dragged down by the shark, breaking off the bowsprit in the process.

Jake's Fate
U.S. Theatrical Ending International/Home Release Ending
Jake is dragged underwater and killed by the shark.
  • This is also his fate in Hank Searls' novelization.
After the shark is killed and the Folly sinks, Michael hears Jake calling out for help, finding him floating, critically wounded but still alive. He jokes that from now on, they'll be studying snails.
