Gilpin was born in Austin, Texas, on September 26, 1966. He is the middle child of 3 children.

Gilpin was 12 when cast to play the role for Sean in early 1978.
Gilpin reportedly said that at one point while on the floating set the teenagers were on, it broke away from its anchorage, and started sailing towards Cuba. Real Hammerhead Sharks started circling the crew, originally meant to be acting in distress. While the producer, Steven Speilberg and Jeannot Szwarc, the director, were filming from a distance, they gave the rest of the team the thumbs up, not knowing that the teens were genuinely calling out for help.

Gilpin also was really shocked when Martha Swatek and Donna Wilkes character were eaten, he thought that it was a real shark.
