Ike Pratt (known by locals as "Cappy") was a fisherman, mechanic, and resident of Amity Island. He was a longtime associate of the legendary fisherman Quint, serving as mate on Quint's boat the Orca.
Cappy received his nickname due to the infamous bright orange cap he wore on his head, that he never seemed to remove. The cap progressively got more and more dirty over time.
Cappy was a skilled deckhand, mechanic, and helmsman aboard the Orca, and when not our at sea, he'd accompany Quint on various errands around the island and sometimes would fulfill those errands himself, if Quint was too busy. Although Quint preferred to do it himself as he enjoyed socialising, Cappy not so much.
Cappy was present at the Amity Town Hall Meeting, during the summer of the First Rogue Shark Attacks. During this meeting, Quint made his intention clear, that would hunt down and kill the shark for no less than $10,000.
Cappy had made his case to Quint prior to this that he thought going after this shark was a foolish endeavour and that it would eventually move on. Quint did not listen and was irritated by Pratt, calling him a coward. It was this remark that caused enormous friction between the two, leading to Pratt shortly after resigning as Quint's mate.
Pratt's warning would turn out to be prophetic as the eventual hunt for the shark would be the end of both the Orca and Quint.
After the defeat of the shark by none other than Martin Brody, Pratt attended a modest funeral service for his former captain. Pratt was also given Quint's surviving possessions and the keys to Quint's shack.
Pratt would eventually procure a boat of his own and fill the void left by his colleague. He had little to no involvement in the Second Rogue Shark Attacks, as he felt that again the shark would go away especially if left alone and deprived of a food source. Pratt became more outspoken during this time and spoke with Larry Vaughn and the town council directly. His advice, unfortunately, falling on deaf ears.
